In 1954 Cyrus Ott, a wealthy American, decides to publish an international English language newspaper in Rome. He buys and renovates an old building for the paper’s headquarters. It is named The Ott Building, but for some inexplicable reason the paper is nameless. What motivated him to embark on this venture remains a mystery until the end of the book.
